RCGA F3K #6 Victorian State Titles 29/4/2018

RCGA F3K #6 - Victorian State Titles, Longwood, 29/04/2018

The F3K State Champs were flown at Longwood on Sunday 29 April, with Jon Day officiating as CD.  Clive Warman flew down from NSW to compete (thanks Clive), and there were five flyers in total - Clive, Jim Houdalakis, Jon Day, Dave Millward, and Hugh Blackburn. We were sorry to have missed out on a few more possible starters owing to their family commitments. It was a nice, sunny and rather cool day with blue skies and a moderate southerly wind.  Lift was there to be had most of the time but as seems common in these conditions, elevated wind speeds after the lift blew past could make it hard to get back to the box and there were a number of land-outs.  Owing to the low numbers we mostly opted for tasks that could be self-timed, i.e. AULD and Last2x4, but we also flew some tasks that require timing (5x2, L3x3).  A variety of planes were used: Snipe 1 and 2, NXT, Concept X5.  The contest for 2nd and 3rd places could hardly have been tighter, with Clive just pipping Jon by 0.1%.  Besides the flying, we had a pleasant day of socialising and spent some time watching a Wedgetail get pestered by smaller birds as it cruised the downwind tree-line looking for food (IIRC the wedgie was an occasional lift indicator, too!).

The overall results can be found here results.pdf
The detailed scores can be found at gliderscore.com.
Final places
1. Hugh Blackburn 100%
2. Clive Warman 84.8%
3. Jon Day 84.7%
4. Dave Millward 79.7%
5. Jim Houdalakis 55.5%

Hugh

RCGA F3K #5 - Diggers Rest, 18/02/2018

RCGA F3K #5 - Diggers Rest, 18/02/2018

Three flyers came to the competition: Marcus Stent, Dave Millward and Hugh Blackburn. While there was some hope of a NSW contingent joining us, in the end that didn't happen, which was a shame and not just because it was a very nice flying day.

With the small numbers we kept to tasks that were simple to run with self-timing (AULD and L2) and flew 6 rounds, the minimum number. All flew Stream NXT in identical Aussie team colours. Winds were "light and variable", i.e. largely thermal driven and we flew in two brackets with a morning tea break in between.

During the break the weather improved somewhat and we mostly got our times for the final three rounds. After we finished the comp, we flew some F5J practice with Dan Haskell who showed up to do some testing. A relaxing and enjoyable day. Scores have been uploaded to gliderscore and can be found at http://www.gliderscore.com/OnLineScores.aspx

After the deletion of a dropped round there wasn't much separation between the scores, especially between 2nd and 3rd.

Summary:

1. Marcus Stent, 100%

2. Dave Millward 96.67%

3. Hugh Blackburn 96.54%

Thanks everyone Hugh Blackburn (CD)

Results and Report F3K #4 - Diggers Rest, 21/01/2018

RCGA F3K #4 - Diggers Rest, 21/02/18

Four flyers came to the competition: Jon Day, Dave Millward, newcomer Paul Golz, and CD Hugh Blackburn.  Also we had two visitors, Gary and Tony, each with full size experience and RC glider interest.
The weather was warm and started with light and variable but basically Northerly winds, swinging round to a steady South-Easterly by early afternoon.  After over an hour of flying for fun we decided to have a brief competition with tasks suitable for self-timing: AULD and L2x4.  All flyers had Stream NXTs so it was an interesting one-design competition.  After a 3 rounds, Paul unfortunately had to retire and we continued for another 3 (the minimum viable number being 6 rounds). Paul flew well and will certainly continue to improve. In some flight slots we all struggled to get our times, but Jon was the clear winner with five 1000 rounds.
After completing 6 rounds, we halted the competition but continued to fly for fun with a mix of F3K, F3J and F5J (one flyer per type!) and eventually stopped around 3pm to pack and have a beer or two.  It was an enjoyable day.
Scores have been uploaded to gliderscore (thanks Gerry for your advice - it was very simple to do) and can be found at http://www.gliderscore.com/OnLineScores.aspx.  See also attached images.
Summary:
1. Jon Day, 100%
2. Dave Millward 92.15%
3. Hugh Blackburn 86.06%
4. Paul Golz 33.16% (Paul flew only 3 rounds).

F3K 8 - Victorian F3K State Championships

7 keen Pilots made the trip to Longwood for the Victorian F3K State Championships and they enjoyed some of the nicest weather Victoria could muster. Light winds, variable conditions and 20 degrees - perfect!!

It was great to have Clive (WC TM) and Jamie (WC Pilot) attend from Newcastle/Sydney for some excellent team practice on the Saturday and a competitive hitout on Sunday - thanks for coming so far for the event. Robert Lilly made the drive from Ballarat and it was great to see Jim make a return to the fold after a bit of a break. Thanks guys!

Dave Milward flew well all day and was leading at the lunch break, but 2 unfortunate model incidents cobbled his day and he finished 4th - what could have been! Jamie had a good hitout to finish 3rd and Jon made the most of his local knowledge and love of working small bouyant thermals to finish 2nd. Marcus had his new Superlight NXT out for its first outing (and the conditions could not have suited it better) and finished 1st.

Thanks again to everyone for making the long trip and making it such a fun day,
